Situated in Torquay, Devon, Cockington stands out as an ideal locale for hosting weddings in Devon. Its intimate ambiance makes it a favoured choice among those seeking a smaller, more personal celebration, accommodating up to 50 guests.
Having had the privilege of photographing numerous weddings at Cockington, with more on the horizon this year. Inspired by this, I've decided to put together a helpful guide on Cockington and tying the knot there!
A Brief History of Cockington Court
Cockington Court, holds a storied past that spans many centuries. First recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, this historic manor has witnessed numerous transitions over time. It has changed hands among prominent families, notably the Carys, who maintained ownership for over six centuries. With its Tudor-era architecture, the estate showcases a blend of architectural styles that reflect its rich history. Today, Cockington Court serves as a vibrant cultural centre, hosting diverse events, exhibitions, and artisan workshops, while remaining committed to preserving its historical significance and allure.
Cockington Court Weddings - The Cockington Wedding Experience
The ceremony room at Cockington is a charming space, featuring a generous window behind the couple that bathes the area in natural light. This setup aligns perfectly with my photography style, which favours a bright and airy aesthetic!

I thoroughly enjoy photographing Cockington Court weddings, as they consistently emanate a relaxed atmosphere. They cater perfectly to couples seeking a straightforward and understated celebration, often opting to host their reception elsewhere. The ceremony itself is typically brief, lasting no more than half an hour. The groom is usually requested to arrive 30 minutes before the ceremony for the legal formalities, while the bride is asked to arrive 15 minutes prior for the same. Once these formalities are completed, it's time for the heartfelt exchange of vows! Following the ceremony, I often take advantage of the picturesque surroundings by capturing a quick couples' portrait near the grand arched window just outside the ceremony room, before proceeding with group photos.
Following the ceremony, is a perfect moment to gather for group and family photographs. The expansive grounds of Cockington offer picturesque settings like the rose garden and the area outside the garden by the church, providing beautiful backdrops for these group shots. Once the group photos are done, guests usually make their way to the reception while we transition to capturing couple portraits. This is a special time for the newlyweds to unwind and savour a few moments alone, taking in the significance of the day, before returning to celebrate with family and friends. During these sessions, I aim for a relaxed atmosphere, gently guiding the couple with minimal posing and prompts to capture their natural smiles and connection.
Confetti at Cockington? Are you allowed it or not?

This subject is highly debated with no definitive answer. From my understanding, confetti is permitted if it's biodegradable and used away from the rose garden. I suggest opting for biodegradable paper circles as confetti, as they offer optimal airtime and descent, resulting in breath-taking images.

What to do if it rains?
Rain is an inevitable part of nature, and if it's forecasted for your wedding day, it's likely to occur. Embracing the rain is key, as there may not be indoor spaces available for group pictures if you're not hosting a reception. To prepare for rainy weather, consider purchasing plenty of clear or white umbrellas as they are perfect for photos and most importantly, keep everyone dry. Remember, rain on your wedding day is considered a symbol of good luck, as it's said that tying the knot in the rain makes the knot harder to untie. So, if rain does fall on your special day, embrace it with positivity and make the most of the unique atmosphere it brings.
In summary, Cockington is a fantastic local venue for tying the knot, offering a plethora of charming settings that provide wonderful opportunities for capturing memorable wedding photographs.
