When it comes to your wedding day, the bridal prep is one of the most exciting parts of the morning. It’s a time filled with anticipation, laughter, and those cherished moments before you say, "I do." As a wedding photographer based in Devon and Somerset, capturing the magic of these early moments is one of my favourite parts of the day. To ensure everything runs smoothly, I’ve compiled a Bridal Prep Checklist for Stunning Wedding Photos: A Photographer’s Guide, that will not only help you stay organised but also make for beautiful, stress-free photos.

1. The Perfect Getting Ready Space for Stunning Wedding Photos

Location is everything when it comes to bridal prep photos. Whether you’re getting ready in a luxurious hotel suite, a charming countryside cottage, or a unique outdoor setting, make sure your space is clean, bright, and clutter-free. Natural light is a photographer’s best friend, so choose a room with large windows and neutral tones to enhance the glow.

2. Bridal Attire Tips for Beautiful Prep Photos

Have your wedding dress, veil, and any accessories like shoes and jewellery ready for photographs. Hanging your dress on a pretty hanger, such as a personalised wooden one, adds a special touch. Choose a setting that provides a beautiful and meaningful backdrop for these detail shots.

3. Essential Bridal Accessories for Stunning Detail Shots

Don’t forget to gather the small details that complete your look. Include:

  • Rings (engagement and wedding bands)

  • Hair accessories or tiaras

  • Perfume bottle (bonus points for a unique or sentimental bottle!)

  • Jewellery, such as earrings and bracelets

These items make for stunning flat-lay shots. If you’re tying the knot in the South West, I’ll capture these meaningful pieces in a way that complements the story of your day.

4. Using Bouquets and Flowers to Elevate Your Prep Photos

Make sure your florist delivers the bouquets and buttonholes to your getting-ready location. Whether you’ve chosen classic roses, wildflowers, or seasonal blooms, having these on hand adds an organic, romantic touch to your prep photos. Flowers from local South West florists can beautifully tie in the charm of your wedding venue.

5. Bridal Prep Outfit Ideas for Picture-Perfect Moments

Matching robes, pyjama's, or getting-ready outfits for you and your bridal party not only look cohesive in photos but also keep everyone comfortable. Consider light, pastel shades that complement the colour scheme of your wedding.

6. Emergency Kit

Pack a bridal prep emergency kit to handle any last-minute mishaps. Essentials include:

  • Safety pins and a sewing kit

  • Tissues for happy tears

  • Makeup touch-up items

  • Hairspray and bobby pins

  • Comfortable shoes or slippers for the morning

7. Snacks and Drinks

Staying hydrated and fuelled is crucial on your big day. Arrange light snacks like fruit, pastries, or sandwiches and a bottle of champagne (or non-alcoholic bubbly) to keep the mood celebratory. Capturing the toasts and laughter with your bridal party adds a layer of joy to your photos.

8. Time Management

Work with your wedding planner or photographer to create a timeline for the morning. Factor in time for hair, makeup, and getting dressed. This ensures we have enough time to capture all those special moments, from candid laughter with your bridesmaids to quiet reflections before heading to the ceremony.

9. Personal Touches to Make Your Bridal Prep Photos Unique

Add sentimental items to your bridal prep, such as:

  • A handwritten letter to your partner

  • A family heirloom

  • Photos of loved ones who can’t be there

Including these personal touches during your prep makes your photos truly unique and meaningful.

10. Relax and Enjoy

Finally, remember that this is your day. Surround yourself with supportive loved ones, take deep breaths, and soak in the excitement. Your happiness and calm will radiate in your photos, creating timeless memories to cherish forever.
